E-commerce SEO: The 8 Highest-ROI Fixes in 2026

After auditing 50+ e-commerce sites in the past 12 months, the same high-impact, quick-win opportunities appear again and again. These 8 fixes — in priority order of typical revenue impact — are the ones we deploy first in every new e-commerce SEO engagement.

Fix 1: Product Schema Markup

Only 23% of e-commerce sites implement complete Product schema. Missing 'offers', 'aggregateRating', or 'availability' from your product schema means you're not eligible for Google's rich results — the star ratings and price chips that dramatically improve CTR. Add complete schema to every product page and submit for rich result testing via Google Search Console.

Fix 2: Faceted Navigation Indexing

Poorly configured faceted navigation is the single most common cause of crawl budget waste on large e-commerce sites. Filters like ?color=red&size=M create thousands of near-duplicate URLs that Google must crawl — taking budget away from your real product pages. Implement canonical tags, use parameter handling in Search Console, and noindex irrelevant filter combinations.

Fix 3: Category Page Content

Category pages drive the most commercial search traffic but are the most under-optimised page type in e-commerce. A category page with no text content will consistently underperform against a competitor with 200–400 words of unique, keyword-rich copy above or below the product grid. This copy should address buyer intent, include target keywords naturally, and answer common pre-purchase questions.

Fix 4: Core Web Vitals on Product Pages

Mobile LCP above 2.5s is a direct ranking disadvantage. The most common LCP culprit on product pages is the hero product image — typically uncompressed, wrong format, and without explicit width/height attributes. Convert all product images to WebP or AVIF, lazy-load below-fold images, and always set explicit dimensions to prevent CLS.

Fix 5: Internal Linking Architecture

Most e-commerce sites link from homepage → category → product but never the reverse. Adding contextual internal links from blog content and buying guides to commercial product and category pages passes PageRank to your high-value pages and dramatically improves their ranking potential. A single buying guide with 10 targeted internal links can lift associated category page rankings by 3–8 positions.

Fix 6: Out-of-Stock Product Handling

Out-of-stock product pages with 404 errors destroy accumulated ranking authority. Never 404 a product page — instead, serve the page with an 'out of stock' notice, a back-in-stock notification form, and 4–6 alternative product recommendations. This retains SEO authority, improves UX, and captures demand you'd otherwise lose permanently.

Fix 7: Merchant Centre Feed Optimisation

If you run Google Shopping, your Merchant Centre product feed is directly connected to your PLAs' ranking and bidding efficiency. Common feed errors — missing GTINs, vague product titles, incorrect category mapping — directly reduce your Shopping visibility. Audit your feed monthly and ensure product titles match the exact search queries your buyers use.

Fix 8: Review Schema on Product Pages

Product pages with aggregateRating schema showing 4.5+ stars earn a 35% higher click-through rate in Google SERPs than identical listings without star ratings. If you have product reviews in your platform (Shopify, WooCommerce, etc.), ensure the review data is exposed via schema markup. This alone can deliver a measurable traffic uplift within 30 days of implementation.
